Made in Kyiv: Interview with the Riot Division designer

Last week I met up with Frothefrost - the designer at Riot Division – in his small warehouse in Kyiv. His street clothing brand has gained popularity in Ukraine when he launched his famous Battle hoodie. I asked him about the clothes he makes, his views on Ukrainian fashion and retail.

The philosophy of Riot Division is based on unleashing the rioter inside people who wear the clothes with statement prints and incredibly comfortable and functional garments.

Frothefrost is, probably, the cutest of tough-looking male designers I know. Here's the translation of our chat. Exclusively for you, my readers.

What makes up your wardrobe?

I like Levi’s Engineered Jeans. As for jackets, I like Belstaff, I have a Boris Bidjan Saberi bomber, Stone Island… these are the main brands that inspire me, and their style is reflected in Riot Division clothes.

Do you go to thrift stores?

I used to. Now I just make my own clothes.

Ukrainian fashion is often criticised for copying western designers. Is there anything that defines Ukrainian street fashion?

What can I say… Everything in fashion is a copied and re-made in a way. The whole thing is global.

What about Ukrainian retail? What needs to be worked on?

Kyiv is full of stores. The problem is in what the designers make and their price policy. Of course I want to lower the prices, but the circumstances dictate them, unfortunately. And there are the troubles related to production and materials. If I increase the scale of my work, the costs will have to be lowered, too.

Is there anything that irritates you in modern fashion?

A man should look like a man. However, there are always two sides to everything, it’s hard to say.

How important is education if you are designer?

European education gives a lot because it allows you to go beyond the limits that are set upon us in our country, you can see new things and be inspired in some new way. I didn’t study design. The technology of garment making is great, but it is not essential. You can find a good tailor to help you with that. I just explain the way I want things done and we decide the way it can be made. 

What should we expect from Riot Division?

Development. I want everything to develop and work on a larger scale, now everything is a bit local. I think that with time more and more people will be after my clothes.

Are you planning to make women’s wear?

I don’t dress women, I can only undress them.

Where else would you like to sell Riot Division clothes?

Ideally… I want to have an online store, although I can’t find the time for it right now.

Твой гардероб из чего состоит?

Люблю Levi’s Engineered Jeans. В основном, и з курточек у меня Belstaff, Boris Bidjan Saberi кожаная курточка есть, Stone Island… вот, собственно то, что меня вдохновляет из вещей и отображается в вещах Riot Division.

На секонды ходишь?

Было время. Сейчас нашил уже вещей и хожу в своих. Раньше была Шулявка, но теперь – не знаю, какой посоветовать.

Украинскую моду часто называют «слизыванием» с  запада. Есть ли что-то типично украинское в нашей street fashion?

Как сказать, все где-то смотрится, где-то переделывается, все это – всемирное достояние.

А что насчет украинского ритейла? Мы все время гвоорим, что у нас либо все очень дорого, либо нет толковых магазинов, где можно молодым дизайнерам продаваться. Чего не хватает?

Магазинов в Киеве полно. Проблема в том, что шьют эти дизайнеры и в ценовой политике. Конечно, хотелось бы, чтобы мои вещи стоили дешевле, но условия диктуют совершенно другие цены. Опять же проблемы пошива, проблемы ткани никто не отменял. Если выходить на большие тиражи, то нужно и стоимость уменьшать.

В современной моде что-то раздражает?

Мужик должен по-мужски выглядеть, а то, в принципе, сейчас все, что происходит – не понятно. А вообще всегда есть одна сторона и вторая, поэтому судить сложно.

Насколько важно образование для дизайнера?

Поучиться в Европе дает очень много, потому что ты выходишь за рамки, которые нам навязывают в нашей стране, ты видишь какие-то новые вещи и что-то тебя по-новому вдохновляет. Касательно обучения, я не учился на дизайнера. Прикольно знать технологии пошива, но это не обязательно.  Можно найти закройщика. Я просто объясняю, как я хочу сделать вещи, и тогда мы приходим к общему знаменателю.     

Чего ожидать от Riot Division?

Развития. Хочется, чтобы все развивалось и делалось более масштабно, а то сейчас все локально. Я думаю, со временем все больше людей будут пытаться найти эти вещи.

Не планируешь делать вещи для девушек?

Я не умею одевать девушек, только раздевать.

Где бы еще хотел продаваться?

В идеале… руки не доходят сделать свой сайт, где бы все продавалось онлайн.
